About Code Fandango

A deliberately small consultancy for work that benefits from direct thinking.

Code Fandango is the independent software, systems and technical consultancy of Neil Bullock.

No relay race

The person you speak to is the person doing the work.

There is no sales-to-account-manager-to-developer chain. That makes it easier to understand the real constraints, change direction when the evidence suggests it, and keep decisions grounded in the organisation’s day-to-day work.

The work ranges from bespoke software and integrations to legacy systems, Linux, servers, databases and the awkward edges between them. The point is not to collect technologies; it is to be useful across the whole problem.

Working style

Curious about the problem. Careful with the answer.

Bespoke development is valuable when it is the right answer—not by default.

01

Understand first

Start with the people, process and constraints before deciding what needs to be built.

02

Improve in useful steps

Small investigations and focused pieces of work can be better than an all-or-nothing programme.

03

Leave things maintainable

Clear documentation and sensible technical choices matter after the interesting part is finished.

Experience

Long experience, kept practical.

Neil has been programming since his teens and has decades of hands-on experience making and maintaining software. That includes modern web systems and older applications alike, plus the infrastructure they rely on.

Code Fandango is comfortable with vague beginnings, unusual requirements and systems that have acquired a little history. Sometimes that leads to a new tool; sometimes it leads to a smaller, more sensible change.
